Your brakes are one of the most important safety systems on your vehicle—but they also tend to be one of the noisiest. If you've ever asked yourself, “Is that squeaking normal?”, you’re not alone.

At Station One, we hear this question almost every day. So let’s break down the most common brake noises, what they mean, and when it’s time to get them checked out.

🚨 Brake Sounds You Shouldn’t Ignore

If you hear any of the following, it’s time to schedule a brake inspection ASAP:

1. Squealing When You Brake

Often caused by worn-down brake pads. Many pads have a built-in wear indicator that squeals to let you know it's time for replacement.

2. Grinding or Growling

This means the pads may be completely worn down, and metal is hitting metal—which can damage your rotors and become an expensive repair if left alone.

3. High-Pitched Screeching (Even When You’re Not Braking)

Could indicate debris caught in the brake assembly or dragging pads. Either way, it needs attention.

4. Rhythmic Thumping or Pulsing

Usually a sign of warped rotors. It often shows up when braking at higher speeds and can affect stopping distance.

🔇 Brake Sounds That Might Be Normal

Not every sound is cause for panic. Some noises are temporary or harmless, like:

  • Light squeaking on cold mornings (moisture on rotors)
  • Clicking or tapping from brake pad movement in the caliper
  • Rusty-sounding brakes after your car’s been sitting for a while

These should go away as you drive—but if they don’t, it’s worth having us take a look.
